Juice Co. Seeks Address Name Change
Mar. 27, 1999
SACO, Maine (AP) _ Fresh Samantha Inc., the fast-growing company that makes healthful fruit juices with funky cartoon labels, is worried that its not-so-natural sounding address conveys an image of smokestacks and chain-link fences.
Because the address, 84 Industrial Park Road, is printed on every bottle, company officials are hoping the city of Saco, Maine, will help them find a more appetizing alternative.
``People think of us as this all-natural, no preservatives, no concentrates company, which we are,'' said Fresh Samantha spokeswoman Betta Stothart. ``But we're located on this Industrial Park Road, which doesn't sound very attractive and it doesn't really apply.''
First, because the city was planning to expand the industrial park to Springhill Road, Fresh Samantha suggested that the City Council adopt that name.
Council members rejected that idea, however, citing the costs of changing street signs, city maps and letterheads of every company on the road.
Now, Fresh Samantha says it may seek the council's permission to name its driveway as a private road and use that as its address.
Among the suggested names: Fresh Samantha Way and Yumdillishous Way, the latter being one of the trademark sayings that appear on most Fresh Samantha labels.
City officials seem receptive. ``As long as it's legal, I don't see any problem with it,'' Mayor William Johnson said.
In seven years, Fresh Samantha has grown from a seller of bean sprouts to a $38 million company, expanding into such markets as New York City, Washington, D.C., and Miami.
While no customers have complained about the current address, ``as our product gets farther away from Maine, people don't have a real idea of what we're about as a company,'' Stothart said.
