Officials: Natural gas caused US jail explosion
May. 09, 2014
PENSACOLA, Florida (AP) — Investigators say a deadly jail explosion in Florida appears to have been caused by natural gas but wouldn't specify whether a leak may have been to blame.
The state fire marshal's office in a news release Friday said investigators have finished their work inside the crumbling Escambia County Jail.
Marshal's office and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives officials say the blast appears unintentional.
Numerous inmates have said they smelled gas in the hours before the explosion. But the county says it had no official reports of a gas leak at the jail that had 2 feet of water in the basement from record-setting rains.
Two inmates died and a corrections officer was paralyzed. Nearly 200 other people were injured.
