Suspicious Briefcase Causes Evacuation of More than 1,000 Tourists
Jun. 01, 1987
BALTIMORE (AP) _ More than 1,000 tourists at the National Aquarium and other Inner Harbor attractions were evacuated as police and firefighters searched an abandoned briefcase, only to find clothing and an electronic calculator.
For nearly two hours Sunday, visitors to Baltimore's harbor were kept away as a team from the city police bomb squad was called in to remove the case.
Authorities had become concerned about the case after a man carried it aboard two West German frigates visiting the harbor on a goodwill tour. The man behaved in a suspicious manner, and once walked away from the case, only to have a ship officer return it.
When the man walked away from the case again, behind the aquarium, authorities evacuated it and the submarine USS Torsk and the Chesapeake lightship, docked nearby. The man was not seen again.
