S. African Crash Death Toll Rises
Oct. 16, 1999
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ Three bodies have been recovered from the scene of a train crash near Johannesburg, raising the overall death toll to four, police said today.
On Friday, authorities had said one person died when a commuter train plowed into the rear of a 30-car freight train.
Dozens of passengers were injured in the collision, and five remained hospitalized today, the South African Press Association reported. The driver and conductor were slightly injured.
The crash occurred during the afternoon rush hour. There were relatively few casualties because most passengers are lower-income workers who ride second class, leaving the first-class compartment largely empty, a commuter system administrator said.
Police have opened an investigation to determine if the driver was negligent.
