BREMEN, Germany (AP) _ A worker discovered a bomb in a garbage bag outside Free Democratic Party offices in this northern city Monday, a day after an office of the party's coalition partner was destroyed by fire.

The bomb was set to explode after the office closed, police said. It was safely defused.

A note was found nearby, criticizing the party and expressing solidarity with the leftist extremist Red Army Faction, said police spokesman Paul Lapsien.

The Free Democrats are coalition partners in the federal government with the Christian Democratic Union. The office of the general secretary of the Christian Democratic Union was burned early Sunday. Police said the fire was the work of an arsonist.

Federal elections are three weeks away, and leaders of both parties have been railing against the left, which they say is a danger to the stability of the German state.
