PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A Pittsfield man caught injecting heroin into his intravenous line while in the hospital has been sentenced to nine months in jail.
Kenneth Rathbun was sentenced Tuesday in Central Berkshire District Court after pleading guilty to misdemeanor possession of heroin as well as larceny for an unrelated shoplifting case.
Prosecutors say a staff member at Berkshire Medical Center entered the 50-year-old Rathbun's room on March 29 and found him in the process of shooting what he acknowledged was heroin into the main IV that went to his neck.
Hospital staff and security officers confiscated the drugs and paraphernalia and called police.
The Berkshire Eagle (http://bit.ly/ZzVPMo ) reports that Rathbun was being treated at the hospital for a large open wound on his arm authorities say is consistent with drug abuse.
