KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Charles Hathaway tipped in a basket as the final buzzer went off Monday to give Tennessee a 75-74 victory over Miami of Ohio.
Miami of Ohio (0-1) had taken a 74-73 lead with seven seconds left on Damon Frierson's running jumper. But Tennessee's (2-0) Tony Harris took the inbound pass, ran the length of the court and missed a short bank shot, which Hathaway tipped in as time ran out.
Two Frierson free throws had given Miami of Ohio a 72-63 lead, their largest margin with less than two minutes remaining.
But over the next 51 seconds, Harris hit a free throw, DeShay Jones added a basket, Harris had a layup and Brandon Wharton hit a 3-pointer to pull the Vols to within one, 72-71.
Wharton added a layup with 34 seconds left to give the Vols the lead, but Frierson followed with his basket in the final seven seconds.
An Isiah Victor free throw with 1:23 remaining in the first half capped a 15-6 Tennessee run that gave the Vols a 41-30 lead, their largest of the half, before heading into the locker room up 43-34.
Frierson's 3-pointer three minutes into the second half capped a RedHawks' 15-6 run to regain the lead at 50-49.
Harris led Tennessee with 18 points while Hathaway finished with 17 and a team-high four rebounds. Miami of Ohio's Wally Szczerbiak scored a career-high 31 points and led his team with ten rebounds. Damon Frierson added 26 points and nine rebounds.
