NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A 14-year-old boy shot in New Haven over the weekend has died of his wounds.
Mayor Toni Harp says Tyriek Keyes died early Thursday after being shot multiple times Sunday night by a masked gunman. Police said at the time that they believe he was specifically targeted.
Keyes had finished the 8th grade and was supposed to start 9th grade in the fall, according to New Haven Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Reginald Mayo.
The boy was a member of an anti-violence group, Ice the Beef. The group's president, Chaz Carmon, tells the New Haven Register that he had left the program for a short period but came back last week and wanted to rejoin.
An investigation into the shooting continues.
