Gomez Retain WBC Title
Dec. 12, 1998
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ Unbeaten Cuban fighter Juan Carlos Gomez retained his WBC cruiserweight title Saturday by knocking out Rodney Gordon in the second round.
Gomez, who fled Cuba for Germany two years, caught Gordon with 2:19 remaining in the round with a left hook. He had dropped the American with the same punch in the opening round.
Gomez, 26-0 with 22 knockouts, was making the third defense of the crown he won Feb. 21 against Argentina's Marcelo Dominguez.
Gordon's record fell to 17-2 with 13 knockouts, after he lost his first try at a world title.
The fight was on the undercard of the WBO light heavyweight title fight between Germany's Dariusz Michaelczewski und U.S. challenger Drake Thadzi.
