GOLD Coast, Australia (AP) — Silah Limo of Kenya has broken Rob de Castella's 32-year record for the fastest marathon run in Australia, clocking 2 hours, 9 minutes, 14 seconds Sunday in winning the Gold Coast Airport Marathon.
The 22-year-old Limo shaved four seconds off the record set by de Castella at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games. Limo kicked clear at the 30 kilometer mark to win from Jeffrey Eggleston of the United States and Japan's Yuki Kawauchi.
De Castella was on hand to see the record pass to Limo and said "I'm probably disappointed that it has taken so long. It was time."
Japan's Asami Kato won the women's race in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 51 seconds.
