Money-losing mid-Missouri hospital set to close next month
Jul. 25, 2017
FULTON, Mo. (AP) — A mid-Missouri hospital is set to close next month because of financial losses, low patient numbers and a deteriorating facility.
The Columbia Missourian (http://bit.ly/2tzpnwp ) reports that NueHealth announced in a news release Monday that the Fulton Medical Center would shut its doors by Sept. 22. The release described the hospital's financial sustainability as "impossible." While the hospital has 37 beds, only 12 were being used last week.
Officials for the city of Fulton and Callaway County had been meeting with hospital about ways to help financially. Callaway County Commissioner Gary Jungermann says the hospital wanted about $200,000 a month to cover losses. He described that as "a pretty tough pill to swallow."
He says county and city officials continue trying to "figure out how to potentially save what we have."
