Providence Journal Publisher Critically Injured In Bicycle Mishap

WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) _ Michael P. Metcalf, chief executive officer of the Providence Journal Co. and publisher of the Providence Journal and Evening Bulletin, was critically injured Sunday in a bicycle accident near his summer home, police said.
Metcalf, 54, apparently fell off his 10-speed bike on a wooded country road not far from his summer place in Westport Harbor, authorities said.
Police said he suffered extensive head injuries and was taken to St. Anne's Hosital in Fall River, where he was listed in extremely critical condition Sunday night.
Police said Metcalf was discovered lying unconscious alongside a at approximately 8 a.m. by another cyclist. Authorities did not know how long he had been there.
Officials said there was no damage to Metcalf's bike, and it did not appear to have been hit by another vehicle.
Metcalf is also chairman of the board of the Providence Journal Co.
