CHICAGO (AP) _ Online sports retailer MVP.com has laid off 36 more employees, leaving it with 43 employees at its Chicago headquarters or a quarter of its original staff.

Company spokeswoman Paula Davis said Monday that the cuts were part of a restructuring plan announced late last year at the company, which has the financial and name backing of Michael Jordan, John Elway and Wayne Gretzky.

Davis said the company's Web site is up and running, taking orders for sports and outdoor equipment. She denied reports that the company would close.

The restructuring included acquisitions last year of Web retailers PlanetOutdoors.com and IgoGolf.com. Many of the functions of those sites were integrated into MVP.com.

In December _ less than a year after the site was launched _ the company laid off 79 people in Chicago; Austin, Texas; and Boulder, Colo.

The privately held company has not disclosed either its losses or the financial stakes of the three sports greats affiliated with it.
