Prosecutors: Man broke into empty house, set fire in bedroom
Feb. 23, 2018
LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Police in New Jersey say a man set fire to an empty house in Long Beach by lighting a stack of mattresses on fire.
The 28-year-old Ship Bottom man allegedly broke into a vacant Long Beach Township home in January and moved a mattress to the master bedroom. The Asbury Park Press reports police say he then stacked the mattresses on top of each other and ignited them with butane.
Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave says witnesses reported seeing the suspect flee the scene. The house was unoccupied for the winter, and firefighters quickly responded to extinguish the blaze.
The arson investigation was completed Tuesday, and the suspect was arrested and now faces arson and burglary charges.
