Eleven Die As Bus Flips on Curve
Oct. 20, 1987
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) _ A bus lost control on a sharp curve and flipped over an embankment, killing 11 people and wounding five others, police said.
The bus, carrying 16 people from Rio de Janeiro to the coastal town of Recife, 1,635 miles northeast, tumbled off the road 140 miles northwest of Rio on Monday, police official Paulo Silva said.
''The bus must have been speeding on the winding mountain road,'' Silva said by telephone from the region. ''It looks like the driver lost control of the vehicle.''
Five passengers were pulled from the wreckage several yards below the two- lane highway.
Police did not know the condition of the passengers.
