NEW YORK (AP) _ Derek Jeter left Wednesday night's game after straining an abdominal muscle, and New York Yankees manager Joe Torre predicted his shortstop would need to go on the disabled list.

Jeter was injured while checking his swing in the fifth inning. He left after grounding out in a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

``He'll probably be disabled,'' Torre said. ``We'll probably know more tomorrow. I would anticipate we'll be missing him for a couple of weeks.''

Jeter and center fielder Bernie Williams are the only Yankees players to start all of the team's 53 games. Torre and a trainer checked Jeter after he appeared to hurt himself, and he finished his at-bat.

``I don't like to come out,'' Jeter said. ``It's underneath my rib. I've never had it before.''

``I think it's pretty much up to me. I have to tell them how I feel. But nobody wants to go on the DL. I won't know more until tomorrow.''

Jeter went 2-for-3 against Tampa Bay and is batting .329 with eight home runs and 34 RBIs. He has made only two errors.

``He's been so durable,'' Torre said. ``He'd be the one guy you don't want to lose.''

Luis Sojo took over at shortstop after Jeter left. The Yankees also could use Dale Sveum and Homer Bush at the spot.
