NAVARRE, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a black bear found dead in a backyard of a Florida home was shot.
In a statement issued on Thursday morning, Florida Fish and Wildlife officials said they're investigating the incident in Navarre, which is near Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle.
Elizabeth Garrett tells the Pensacola News Journal that she saw the bear in her backyard on Wednesday and at first thought it was taking a nap. She called the wildlife agency. She said it appears the bear was shot in the stomach.
Wildlife officials say that killing a black bear in Florida carries a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.
