Signs of Recovery Seen in Europe
Feb. 06, 2002
PARIS (AP) _ Europe's economy is showing signs of recovery from a period of stagnation, Bank of France governor Jean-Claude Trichet said Tuesday.
Trichet, speaking to reporters after a meeting with French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, also said French industrial production ``should be good'' in January this year based on a survey of business leaders.
``Month after month, we question 12,000 business leaders, and the last time we did, they told us that January should be good,'' he said, without elaborating.
``As for the whole of Europe, at this time, after a period of stagnation, we are noticing certain signs of recovery,'' said Trichet, who is also a member of the European Central Bank's policymaking panel.
``We are starting to emerge from a period of stagnation, but we must remain prudent,'' he said.
