MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Prosecutors in Memphis say a man has been convicted in the fatal shooting of a liquor store owner 27 years ago.
The Shelby County district attorney's office says 61-year-old Stanley Owens was convicted Thursday of voluntary manslaughter in death of 47-year-old Edward Askew.
Askew was shot during an attempted robbery of his liquor store on Feb. 9, 1990. Owens was shot in the thigh during a struggle, but was able to get away.
Memphis police received a call three years ago from a federal prison inmate in Alabama who provided accurate details of the shooting that were never made public. He also identified Owens as the gunman in the holdup.
A witness identified Owens in a photo lineup and in court.
Sentencing is set for Oct. 11.
