OZONA, Texas (AP) _ Authorities are at a loss to explain the motives of a 22-year-old wife accused of shooting an exotic dancer performing at a party she didn't want her husband to attend, authorities said Sunday.

''That's a good question,'' said Crockett County deputy Jimmy Gillit, who works in this community of about 3,000 people roughly 140 miles southeast of Odessa.

Maria Rodriguez of Ozona was charged with aggravated assault after she allegedly shot exotic dancer Kandy Sears while Ms. Sears and another woman were performing at a private party Aug. 29, Gillit said.

Ms. Sears, also of Ozona, was wounded in the thigh by a round from a .25- caliber handgun and was discharged after three days' hospitalization last week. Mrs. Rodriguez was free on bond.

Crockett is a dry county, and the party-goers had rented the former G.I. Forum hall for a party and hired the dancers to entertain, officials said.

Mrs. Rodriguez reportedly opposed her husband attending the party. The couple argued outside the hall and continued their quarrel inside, Gillit said.
