SEATTLE (AP) _ Seattle Mariners general manager Woody Woodward said he has decided on his choice as the team's next manager, but isn't saying who it is, the Seattle Post-Intelligancer reported Saturday.
A reliable source from another American League team, whose identity was not given, said he heard the manager was Jim Lefebvre, the third base coach and hitting instructor for the Oakland Athletics, the paper reported.
Lefebvre is also considered to be at the top of the California Angels' managerial candidate list.
''I have a good idea what direction we should go in and we'll try to finalize it as soon as possible,'' Woodward said from Palm Springs, Calif., where he was attending a meeting of baseball's general managers.
Lefebvre was unavailabe for comment Saturday, but said during the American League playoffs that he wanted to manage the Mariners.
Lefebvre has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Jimmy Snyder, fired four days after the regular season.
Woodward said it is possible ''we could get it all done next week,'' but declined to put a deadline on a hiring.
''I have said all along that I would like to get it done before the winter meetings and I still feel that way,'' Woodward said.
The winter meetings are Dec. 5-7 in Atlanta.
