TERRELL, Texas (AP) _ Driver distraction probably caused the church bus wreck that killed five people last week, the Department of Public Safety said Tuesday.
Based on survivor accounts, driver Ernest Carter Jr. was standing up and adjusting the mirror while the bus was moving, DPS officer Patrick Lewis said.
Carter, 51, was among the dead. Autopsy results showed he had no drugs or alcohol in his system.
The bus, chartered by Metro Church of Garland, hit a concrete pillar on Interstate 20. Federal officials ruled out mechanical failure last week.
At least 36 other people were injured in the accident, about 30 miles east of Dallas.
