CHICAGO (AP) _ Charlotte Smith scored 11 of her 16 points in the fourth period Friday night, and the San Jose Lasers withstood a late Chicago rally to hand the Condors their third consecutive loss, 78-68.
With the game tied 53-all after three periods, Smith scored 11 of the Lasers' first 13 points in the final quarter. Smith's three-point play followed by a three-point play from Katryne Gaither gave the Lasers a 69-59 lead with 4:41 left.
But a basket from E.C. Hill, a 3-pointer by Adrienne Goodson and then a free throw by Goodson cut the deficit to 69-65 at 1:58 to go.
But seven consecutive San Jose points, five from Jennifer Azzi, sealed the victory. Azzi had seven points in the final 48 seconds _ five from the free throw line.
San Jose led 20-14 after the first period, and 35-29 at the half.
Poor shooting hurt Chicago, which converted just 22-of-67 (33 percent) field goal attempts. Meanwhile, San Jose shot 52 percent, hitting 28-of-54 shots.
Azzi and Kedra Corn-Holland had 15 points each for San Jose.
Goodson had 17 points. Deanna Tate and Hill each added 12 for the Condors, and Sheri Sam had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Chicago's leading scorer Yolanda Griffith, who was averaging 19 points, was held to 10.
