Fla. Gas Plant Explosion Injures 3
Aug. 14, 1998
PERRY, Fla. (AP) _ A huge explosion rocked a natural gas plant Friday, injuring four firefighters and creating a fireball that could be seen from miles away.
``It exploded into a huge ball of flame,'' said Roy Woods, Taylor County emergency management director.
Employees who worked near the Florida Gas Transmission Compressor Station had already evacuated the area because of a fire that erupted about 2:30 p.m. Lightning is suspected of starting the blaze, Woods said.
Firefighters from Tallahassee and other neighboring communities helped battle the blaze just outside of Perry, about 50 miles southeast of Tallahassee.
Four firefighters were in stable condition and their injuries were not considered life threatening.
Residents within two miles of the plant were evacuated.
