OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) _ Ukrainian Andrei Medvedev used early service breaks against fourth-seeded Tim Henman to beat the British player in straight sets Friday and advance to the semifinals of the Estoril Open.
Medvedev, who won here in 1993 and is currently ranked 33rd, broke Henman's serve twice while winning the first set 6-2. He went ahead 4-0, then cruised to a 6-3 victory in the second set.
Medvedev, the defeated finalist in last year's French Open, will meet Spaniard Carlos Moya, who rallied to beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Former world No. 1 Moya played aggressively, an indication that he might be returning to form after a recurring back problems. The Spaniard ousted second-seeded Magnus Norman in the second round.
Unseeded at Estoril and currently ranked 46th in the world, Moya retired from the Australian Open in January with a recurrence of the back injury which forced him to withdraw from last year's U.S. Open.
Another unseeded Spaniard, Francisco Clavet, who beat top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the opening round, also made the semifinals. Clavet swiftly overcame No. 8 Nicolas Escude of France 6-3, 6-2.
Clavet will face No. 3 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, who beat Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6 (6), 6-4. Both players had come through postponed second-round matches in the morning.
In the women's quarterfinals, top-seeded Anke Huber of Germany advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Spaniard Cristina Torrens-Valero. Italian Tathiana Garbin upset No. 7 Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary 7-6 (1), 6-4, and will play Huber on Saturday.
Second-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France advanced, besting Spaniard Angeles Montolio 6-3, 6-4. Dechy will take on No. 5 Italian Silvina Farina, who overcame Switzerland's Miroslava Vavrinec 6-3, 6-2.
