PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Mark Plansky scored 21 points and Tom Greis made eight-for-eight from the field in scoring 20, pacing Villanova to an 80-78 upset of ninth-ranked Syracuse Monday night and ending the Orangemen's 10-game winning streak.
Villanova boosted its overall record to 12-3 and 4-0 in the conference, while Syracuse dropped to 12-2 and 2-1 in the Big East.
Sherman Douglas scored 22 and Derrick Coleman 20 for Syracuse.
Villanova, sparked by Plansky's two 3-point shots, ran off a 12-2 spurt to take a 70-59 lead with 7:31 left in the game. But Syracuse came back on an 11-2 surge, the last four on consecutive baskets by Douglas, to close within 72-70 with 5:16 remaining.
Villanova boosted its lead to 78-72 with 2:54 on the clock. Coleman made a 3-point play to make it 78-75, but Villanova's Kenny Wilson, who had 18 points, made two free throws to offset a 3-point Syracuse basket by Steve Thompson.
Syracuse had a chance to pull it out when Villanova turned the ball over on an inbounds play with one second left. But a Syracuse pass was deflected out of bounds as time ran out.
In the first half, Villanova snapped a 22-22 tie, scoring seven straight points in a 15-6 rally that gave the Wildcats a 37-28 lead with 3:20 left. But Syracuse came back with a 9-2 spurt to trial 39-37 at intermission.
