Expos' Loss Guarantees Dodgers Playoff Spot
Sep. 28, 1996
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ While the Los Angeles Dodgers were trying to wrap up the NL West title Friday night against San Diego, they learned they were assured at least a wild-card spot in the playoffs.
In the bottom of the third inning, the scoreboard at Dodger Stadium flashed the final from Montreal: Braves 6, Expos 4. The loss by the Expos dropped them three games back of Los Angeles in the wild-card race, with just two games remaining for Montreal.
Los Angeles was assured of the spot because the Dodgers have 90 wins and can't be caught by Montreal, which has 87 wins with two games left.
The Dodgers entered their three-game series against the Padres knowing they needed just one win to win their second consecutive NL West title.
Montreal's loss also moved the Padres 1 1/2 games up on the Expos in the wild-card standings.
