VATICAN CITY (AP) _ Leaders of the Roman Catholic church of the United States expressed their regret Wednesday for failing to prevent the sex abuse scandal that has engulfed the American church.
In a message to American priests issued at the end of an extraordinary two-day meeting, the cardinals and leaders of the bishops conference said ``we know the heavy burden of sorrow and shame that you are bearing because some have betrayed the grace of ordination by abusing those entrusted to their care.''
``We regret that episcopal oversight has not been able to preserve the church from this scandal,'' they said.
