Stable fire kills 14 horses
Apr. 09, 1997
SAUGUS, Mass. (AP) _ Flames that rose 100 feet into the air leveled a stable and a barn and gutted a second barn today, killing 14 horses and two dogs.
The remainder of the 38 horses that lived on the Majestic Stables property in this rustic area of suburban Boston were accounted for, Fire Chief Walter Newbury said. At least one horse escaped the flames, then ran back into the barn in terror.
Horse owners from around the Boston area rushed to the grisly scene of charred horses caught in their stalls.
``These horses are like part of your family,'' said Kim Hamel of Cambridge, whose horses, Cocoa and Scribbles, escaped unharmed.
The stable's owner, John Lingaitis, said he awoke to find his room ``lit like a spotlight,'' the burning two-story barn visible through his window.
Investigators were combing through the rubble with pitchforks and shovels to determine the cause, but did not consider the fire suspicious.
