Thief Pleads Guilty to Stealing Name from Mug Shot
Sep. 28, 1996
EXETER, England (AP) _ The judge found it hard to blame a thief for stealing his own name _ off his mug shot.
``I am not going to add to your sentence,'' Judge Sean Overend told Paul Carthy after he pleaded guilty to stealing the magnetic letters attached to the board he held up when posing for a mug shot.
A police report quoted Carthy as telling investigators, ``I took them as a souvenir.''
The mug shot session came after Carthy was arrested for shoplifting seven bottles of liquor. On Friday, Carthy, 25, pleaded guilty to that as well, and was sentenced to three months in jail.
Police found the magnetic letters when they came by his home in Plymouth, on England's southern coast, to question him on another matter.
