DILI, East Timor (AP) _ Exiled guerrilla leader Jose Alexandre ``Xanana'' Gusmao has slipped back into East Timor, military sources said Friday, while nearly 2,000 refugees arrived aboard the first ship to carry displaced East Timorese home from Indonesia.

The Indonesian military sources did not say when or how Gusmao had arrived, but leaflets distributed by the resistance movement's umbrella group said he would make an appearance Friday morning in Dili, the East Timor capital.

Loudspeaker trucks drove through the city streets announcing the homecoming of the 53-year-old guerrilla chief, who is likely to become the new country's first president after a period of transition under United Nations control.
