Argentina's de la Rua Recovering
Nov. 15, 1999
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ Argentine president-elect Fernando de la Rua was recovering satisfactorily from lung surgery Monday, his doctors said.
De la Rua, who is scheduled to be sworn in Dec. 10, was diagnosed with pneumothorax, a condition caused when air escapes from a lung and builds up in the chest cavity. He underwent surgery on Friday.
``The condition of Mr. Fernando de la Rua is favorable. He spent a quiet night, experienced no pains and ate food normally,'' the medical bulletin said. Doctors said de la Rua, 62, would be released Wednesday.
During the procedure, doctors cut a tiny incision in de la Rua's right lung and inserted a small tube to release the air accumulated in the chest cavity.
If left untreated, pneumothorax can cause partial or complete collapse of the lung. It is a common problem among adults and smokers like de la Rua.
