HELSINKI, Finland (AP) _ Felix Gottwald of Austria outsprinted Germany's Ronny Ackerman to win the season's first Nordic Combined World Cup event by 0.8 seconds Saturday.

Gottwald placed fifth in the ski jumping portion with 113.5 meters and made up a 20-second deficit during the 7.5-kilometer cross country skiing.

Marco Baacke of Germany was third, 26.5 seconds behind Gottwald. Austria's Christoph Bieler was next, followed by Germany's Georg Hettich.

Finland's Jaakko Tallus, whose 121.5-meter effort put him in first place after the jump, dropped to 20th overall.

Defending World Cup champion Samppa Lajunen was 13th, and former champion Bjarte Engen Vik finished 44th after a mediocre jump of 90 meters.
