INS Agent Fined for Smuggling Alien
Oct. 15, 1999
BOSTON (AP) _ A U.S. immigration officer was fined $500 and given a year of probation Friday for smuggling her lover into the country.
Paula Jesmer, 35, pleaded guilty in June to taking 36-year-old Jose Cabral-Simas over the Canadian border in her car.
She met him in 1996 when he was a prisoner under her supervision at an Immigration and Naturalization Service center in Boston, where he was awaiting deportation to his native Portugal for a drug conviction.
He left the country in 1997, but the pair met up in Montreal in August last year and drove to Ms. Jesmer's home near Boston. They were caught after someone tipped authorities that Cabral-Simas was back in town.
``He professed real affection and then used her like a chip in a poker game,'' said Ms. Jesmer's lawyer, Charles Balliro.
She was also ordered to perform 500 hours of community service.
Cabral-Simas is awaiting sentencing for illegally re-entering the country.
