France Expels Nephew of Syrian President
Aug. 04, 1993
PARIS (AP) _ France has expelled a nephew of Syrian President Hafez Assad, declaring him undesirable, the Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday.
Ribal Assad, son of the Syrian leader's brother Rifaat, was ordered to leave due to ''his behavior for the past few months,'' said ministry spokeswoman Catherine Colonna.
Neither the ministry nor Le Canard Enchaine, an investigative weekly that first reported the expulsion Tuesday, said what the objectionable behavior was.
According to the weekly, Ribal Assad ignored warnings from the Interior Ministry, which oversees the French police.
The family of Rifaat Assad, one of Syria's three vice presidents, spends a considerable amount of time at residences in France.
Ribal Assad will be barred from France indefinitely, Le Canard Enchaine reported, citing Foreign Ministry communiques.
