Daughter of Defeated Candidate Critically Injured

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) _ A daughter of a defeated mayoral candidate was critically injured in an auto accident as she prepared to join friends and supporters of her father to wait for voting results.
Monica Huerta Allen, 25, was in critical condition Wednesday at Tucson Medical Center. She suffered severe heard injuries in the Tuesday evening accident, Pima County sheriff's officials said.
Her father, former state welfare director John Huerta, was defeated Tuesday in the Democratic primary by former City Councilman Tom Volgy. The Republican primary was won by former Police Chief William J. Gilkinson.
Instead of going to the restaurant where he and others were to watch election returns on television, Huerta spent the night with his family at the hospital while his daughter underwent surgery.
On Monday, Mrs. Allen's father-in-law died, said Frank Davis, Huerta's nephew and manager of the restaurant where campaign workers had gathered.
