Judge doubts Providence student housing measure will work
Feb. 12, 2018
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island judge has ruled in favor of a Providence ordinance that limits the number of college students who can rent a house at once.
WPRI-TV reports Superior Court Judge Maureen Keough sided with the city in her decision on Monday while also writing that the measure probably won't achieve its objective. The 2015 ordinance prohibits landlords from renting out single homes to more than three college students at one time.
City Council passed the zoning measure in order to curb student partying in neighborhoods near Providence College and Rhode Island College. Keough said the city failed to show how the measure will improve neighborhood conditions.
The Rhode Island chapter of the ACLU had previously challenged the constitutionality of the ordinance and the organization is considering an appeal.
