MIAMI (AP) _ The Miami Dolphins placed backup safety Greg Jeffries on injured reserve Tuesday after he underwent surgery on his left knee, then signed safety Kevin Williams.

The Dolphins also released wide receiver Damon Savage off their practice squad, while signing Sherrod Gideon to take his spot.

Jeffries underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove loose bodies in his left knee.

Jeffries played in 11 of the Dolphins' first 12 games, all in a reserve role, but was a regular on special teams.

Williams, a third-round draft choice of the New York Jets in 1998, appeared in the Jets' first nine games this year, starting seven at free safety, and getting 14 tackles. He also returned 21 kickoffs for a 26.2-yard average, including a 97-yarder for a touchdown against Buffalo.

Williams' return average is currently second in the AFC and fourth in the NFL. He was released by the Jets on Nov. 7.
