Hirata surges ahead in Kenshoen Ladies

MATSUYAMA, Japan (AP) _ Mitsuyo Hirata shot a 1-under-par 71 today and took a one-stroke lead going into the final round of the Kenshoen Ladies-Dogo golf tournament.
Hirata, winner of two tournaments in seven years as a pro, sank three birdies against two bogeys in negotiating swirling winds and fast greens at the 6,271-yard Dogo Golf Club course in western Japan.
The round left the 32-year-old Osaka native at 3-under 141. She had started the day two strokes off the pace.
Under the day's tough conditions, only four other players broke par.
Mikino Kubo, had a 71 and shared second place at 142 with overnight leader Yuko Saito, who struggled to a 74.
Kaori Harada had a 72 and was alone in fourth at 143.
South Korean Kim Ai-sook shot the day's best score of 70 to share fifth at 144 with Yuko Motoyama, who had a 71.
