WASHINGTON (AP) _ A Senate investigative committee today recommended challenging President Clinton in federal court for refusing to allow a former aide to turn over disputed notes from a 1993 Whitewater meeting.

On a party lines by a 10-8 margin, the Republican-led committee adopted a resolution asking the full Senate to challenge in federal court Clinton's claim that the notes are protected by attorney-client privilege.

A vote by the Senate could come as early as Tuesday. The next step would then be for Senate lawyers to file a civil action seeking to enforce the subpoena that the White House has resisted.
