Saints Cut 17, Place Mitchell on IR
Aug. 31, 2003
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Running back Ki-Jana Carter and tight end David Sloan were among 17 players cut Sunday by the New Orleans Saints and starting safety Mel Mitchell was placed on injured reserve.
Mitchell went down on a block by Miami backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels late in the first quarter of the 24-10 loss to Miami in the final exhibition game. Jay Bellamy, who started 16 games at free safety last season, will replace Mitchell at strong safety, coach Jim Haslett said.
``Jay knows the defense better than I do, so we'll be OK,'' free safety Tebucky Jones said.
Jones and Bellamy are the only healthy safeties on the roster.
Carter, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 draft, was brought to training camp during the last week as a possible backup for Deuce McAllister. Against the Dolphins, Carter gained 94 yards on 25 carries. He also caught three passes for 26 yards.
``For a guy that was out of football for a year, I think he stuck it up in there pretty good,'' Haslett said at the time.
Sloan started 12 games for the Saints last year, catching 12 passes for 127 yards. In the past eight months, he had surgery on his left toe, left knee and right shoulder. The most recent procedure was Aug. 4, when Sloan had shoulder surgery. The operation sidelined him for nearly two weeks.
Also cut, as teams met the NFL-mandated 53-player roster limit, were DL Kendrick Allen, WR Talman Gardner, FB Jeremy Allen, G Peter Heyer, WR Kareem Kelly, G Scot Osborne, G Melvin Paige, DE John Schlecht, CB B.J. Tucker, C Terence Wagner, DE Greg White, QB Tory Woodbury and T Scott Sanderson.
The Saints also waived injured DT Jovon Bush and QB Chris Finlen.
