TOKYO (AP) — Urawa Reds beat defending champion Sanfrecce Hiroshima 1-0 to take over top spot in the J-League from Sagan Tosu, who lost 2-0 at home to FC Tokyo on Saturday.
Yuki Abe slotted in a rebound for Urawa in the 22nd minute after Yosuke Kashiwagi's free kick came back off a post.
Kawasaki Frontale moved into second place after holding off a late comeback attempt to beat relegation-threatened Cerezo Osaka 5-4. Frontale were 4-1 up at halftime before Cerezo fought back in the second. Diego Forlan made it 5-4 for Cerezo with five minutes left but Frontale hung on for the win.
Frontale leap-frogged Sagan Tosu, who have now lost two in a row since parting company with manager Yoon Jung-hwan despite being top of the division.
Fourth-place Kashima Antlers also kept up the pressure on the Reds with a 1-0 win over Ventforet Kofu, while Kashiwa Reysol downed Vissel Kobe 2-0.
Also, Gamba Osaka's winning run ended with a 1-0 loss at home to Nagoya Grampus, Vegalta Sendai won 3-2 against Shimizu S-Pulse, Albirex Niigata beat Omiya Ardija 2-1 and Yokohama F. Marinos easily won 3-0 away at bottom club Tokushima Vortis.
