Man, 2 Boys Missing From Colo. Hike
Apr. 29, 1998
CANON CITY, Colo. (AP) _ Volunteers on horseback and all-terrain vehicles searched snow-covered Tanner Mountain today looking for a man and two boys missing for four days wearing only shorts and T-shirts.
Troy Tilley, 27, and his 11-year-old stepson, Drew, both of Canon City, along with a friend, Joseph Lippencott, 10, of Colorado Springs, went for an afternoon hike on the mountain on Saturday.
A storm blew in with freezing rain and up to a foot of snow.
Fremont County Sheriff's Detective Harry Sharp said today that foul play was not suspected.
Sharp said abandoned cabins, cliff overhangs and caves could provide shelter for the missing, lightly dressed trio. ``We're still optimistic.''
Tilley is an experienced outdoorsman who is familiar with Tanner Mountain, said his aunt, Nancy Tilley.
``That's why the family thinks something has happened to him. The boys, you have to remember, are just 10 and 11, and I don't know if they would want to leave him and try to hike out by themselves,'' she said.
``They told us that time was running out,'' Joseph's mother, Carmen Lippincott, said Tuesday.
Searchers have checked abandoned mine shafts on the mountain with heat-sensing equipment in case the three fell in, but found nothing.
