PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ How it went for Garth Brooks on Tuesday at spring training for the San Diego Padres:

COUNTRY CAMPER: Brooks pinch-hit for starter Andy Ashby in the bottom of the seventh and hit a broken-bat, one-hopper to shortstop Lou Collier, dropping his average to .053 ( 1-for-19) in official spring games. He stayed in the game in left field, but didn't have any chances.

HIGH NOTE: Brooks at least got the ball to an infielder. In his previous four spring at-bats, he had two strikeouts and two little tappers that the catcher fielded and threw him out.

ON THE RECORD: ``Well, I got some extra work in and at least I hit the ball past the catcher this time,'' said Brooks, who took extra batting practice on a side field before the game.
