21 Die After Boat Sinks in India
Nov. 22, 2001
LUCKNOW, India (AP) _ An overcrowded boat capsized and sank in the strong currents of a river in northern India on Thursday, killing all 21 people on board, police said.
Twenty bodies were recovered after the accident on the Ghaghra River in Rudauli, about 310 miles southeast of New Delhi, a local official, Bharat Pandey, said by telephone. Police were searching for one body, he said.
The victims were villagers from the area.
Uttar Pradesh state authorities ordered an investigation. Boat accidents are common in rural areas where villagers cram rickety vessels to cross rivers that lack bridges or safe ferry services.
