NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Police have arrested a 51-year-old sex offender in connection with a fatal stabbing in New Bedford.
The Bristol County district attorney's office says James Andrews, of New Bedford, was charged with murder Thursday in the killing of 47-year-old Allan Monteiro Sr. Andrews also was charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
Police responded to a report of a stabbing inside an apartment at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Authorities say Monteiro was dead when officers arrived. No information on a motive has been released.
Andrews is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in New Bedford District Court. It's not clear if he has a lawyer who could respond to the allegations.
State records show Andrews was convicted of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 in 1992.
