MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Brandy Reed scored 22 points and had several spectacular assists and Tonya Edwards added 21 points as the Minnesota Lynx held off the Sacramento Monarchs 76-69 Monday night.
The Lynx led by as many as 14 and never trailed, but had to fight off a furious rally by the Monarchs, who were led by Yolanda Griffith's 22 points.
After Griffith's free throw pulled Sacramento to 70-65 with 1:29 left, the Lynx hit 6-of-8 free throws to seal their first victory in three tries against the Monarchs.
After Sacramento tied it at 48, Edwards scored nine points in a 13-2 run to give Minnesota a 61-50 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
The Lynx, who had been held below 60 points in five of their previous six games, took a 43-35 halftime lead behind Reed's 16 points.
Minnesota, which fell to the Monarchs by 14 and 17 points in their previous meetings, jumped out to a 21-7 lead thanks to seven points from Reed, including a three-point play off a steal and a tip-in off a miss by Edwards.
Griffith, who owns the league's third-best scoring average, was held to just three points over the first 17 minutes. But she broke out for 12 points during a seven-minute span when the Monarchs tied it at 48.
The teams wrap up their four-game season series next week in Sacramento.
