Hutchinson Technology To Cut Jobs
Aug. 04, 1999
HUTCHINSON, Minn. (AP) _ Hutchinson Technology Inc. will cut 500 jobs at its plant here and increase employment at plants in South Dakota and Wisconsin as it consolidates some manufacturing operations, the company said Wednesday.
To improve efficiency and cut costs, assembly operations now based in Hutchinson will be transferred to the company's plants in Eau Claire, Wis., and Sioux Falls, S.D., the company said.
Hutchinson Technology is the leading worldwide supplier of suspension assemblies for computer disk drives, which supports the mechanism that allows users to read from and write to the hard drive.
The job cuts represent a little more than 6 percent of Hutchinson's 8,000-member work force.
Employees whose jobs are eliminated will be offered severance packages and help in finding new jobs. The company also said it will offer relocation assistance to Hutchinson employees interested in jobs that become available at the company's other plants.
Hutchinson Technology will take a charge in its fiscal fourth quarter ending Sept. 26 to cover the consolidation.
