JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ The parents of a 2-year-old girl fatally shot by her 3-year-old brother were charged Monday with violating a state law designed to keep loaded guns away from children.

Ernest and Mona Newton were charged with felony culpable negligence, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Their daughter, Brittany Aaron Newton, died from a single shot to her head March 29 when her 3-year-old brother picked up a .357-caliber pistol and it went off, said State Attorney Harry Shorstein.

Authorities said there were a dozen guns, including rifles, a shotgun and handguns, in the home.

Shorstein said the Newtons would be arraigned next week.
