BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — A funeral service is planned for a Brockton lawmaker who won praise as a tireless advocate for seniors and disabled residents.

State Sen. Thomas Kennedy died last week at age 63. A large turnout is expected when a funeral Mass is celebrated on Tuesday at St. Edith Stein Parish at 11 a.m.

A 1971 accident left Kennedy a quadriplegic and required him to use a wheelchair the remainder of his life. But the lifelong Brockton resident overcame his disability to serve as a city councilor, state representative and senator during his more than three decades in public life.

Tributes to Kennedy, a Democrat, came from both sides of the political aisle.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker called Kennedy an inspiration for people facing their own difficult challenges in life.
